A second hand smoke may be also known as involuntary smoking or passive smoking. Second hand smoking may occur when a tobacco product is burned or when the smoke generated, by a smoker is inhaled by another person. Scientific researches & studies reveal that the second hand smoke may arise a very small but measurable chance of cancers among those persons who do not smoke at all. This may happen even if the exposure to second hand smoke is occasional or in moderate amount. Studies conducted in the similar fields have also concluded that prolonged or continuous exposure present with several serious health hazards which includes increased risks of heart diseases, lung cancers, and miscarriage & birth defects in pregnant women and among the non-smokers as well.
The initial effects of a passive smoke may be small or ignorable but in a long-term basis its consequences are significant. Further more its fatal impacts especially show up in the respiratory health of a person. The effects of involuntary smoking may count upon every one, but children are especially vulnerable to this as they undergo the developmental stages. Its short exposure may cause frequent headaches, nausea, drowsiness etc. Persons suffering from allergy can stuffy & runny noses, watery eyes, accompanied by frequent coughing, sneezing and wheezing, as tobacco is an active allergen. However if the exposure prolonged and frequent it can positively give rise to lung cancer or probably increase risks of heart attacks. Chances of development of asthma may also pertain in case of both the children and adults, though the chances are higher in case of the children’s.
Several environmental agencies in the advanced countries of the world has classified second hand smoke as human carcinogen i.e. an agent which causes cancers upon prolonged exposure. And that has aroused consciousness among the people about the ill effects it causes. Organizations both government and non government are trying to put an iron hand in this regard by banning of smoking in public and work places. Attempts are made in local, state, national and international levels by enacting public policies in order to protect people from the negative impacts of second hand smoke & the consequent diseases and addiction it causes.
