There are forms of heart disease that are hereditary and there are forms of heart disease that are not hereditary. Speed with which the acquired heart disease develops can be related to the presence of risks factors. For example, patients who have ischemic heart disease where the blood supply to the heart has decreased , rate at which this disease develops or progresses is influenced by many risks factors. The patient can control some of these risks factors and some cannot. If one has history of heart disease in family or members of family have risk factors for heart disease, like as high cholesterol or high blood pressure, there is a risk of heart disease for that person. The first-degree relatives i.e. father, mother, brother, sister with heart disease the risk is more. If heart disease is clustering in family, it may be due genetic problem and/or life style. Unhealthy habits like improper diet, no exercise and smoking are often learnt in the family. Heart disease is caused by various different factors and although you cannot choose your genes you can choose the life style. By following healthy lifestyle and taking any medication that helps, it is still possible to lower your risk even if your genes predispose you to heart disease. In fact, some rare forms of heart disease are hereditary, such as IHSS and some forms of familial cardiomyopathys. Coronary disease is considered as multifactorial. If you have a family history you should be screened carefully.
Our genes define our identity and they cannot be changed, however the effects of abnormal genes can often be limited by simple measures. Although genes increase risk of a heart attack, this can be minimized by healthy life style.
